mantra for divine illumination
Om Bhur Bhuvah Svaha
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat
Om. Earth. Athmosphere. Heaven. May
we focus our awareness on the alluring
radiance of the rising sun, the Vivifier; may
it inspire our thoughts and meditations.
This is the Savitri Gayatri mantra, the most ancient of all mantras still in use (its at least 3,500 years old). There are many kinds of Gayatri mantras directed at different aspects of the Divine; this one invokes the rising and setting sun, called the "Vivifier" because it is the source of all natural energy on Earth. ("Savitur" is the illuminator of life, which is symbolized by, but is not literally, the sun.) The sun also symbolizes the divine light that animates our understanding and spiritual practice. This mantra is repeated every sunrise and sunset by millions of people in India.
